WebCatalog – Running web apps on the desktop, Check!

Update, since July 1st, 2023 WebCatalog dropped Linux support.

Linux has been my daily driver for almost 13 years (Mandrake Linux 7 and Red Hat Linux 9 don’t count since I ended up coming back to Windows ASAP). It all started as an experiment; Ubuntu 10.04 was the chosen distribution, and such change brought some challenges related to productivity applications and games support.

In recent years, Linux users have benefited from cloud applications; something like editing an XLSX or DOCX file using a browser is viable. To improve such tasks, WebCatalog enables running Web apps on the desktop, like a native application.

WebCatalog benefits:

  • Apps are searchable, they appear in Kickoff/Krunner.
  • Apps can be pinned in the task manager.
  • Native notifications support.
  • Every app is isolated from the rest.
  • You can add your own custom apps.

Bottom line

WebCatalog successfully runs Outlook, WhatsApp, Duolingo, Bookshelf (Vitasource), Kindle CloudReader, and Photopea. The experience is far from flawless, and glitches like an unstable Internet connection or application bug may occur from time to time.
